Cargo shorts

what happened to the stripes?
I finally got around to sewing up my last Japan purchase. It is a striped canvassy fabric that I had purchased for the Resident Entomologist, who did not really want it. I had made the Bondi dress for Ottawa daughter out of the same fabric - different colour.

I decided to make another pair of Angelia cargo shorts - I wear the other ones I have all summer. But this time I added a utilitarian pocket for my phone, to replace the pretty, but useless, coin pocket.

linea = linen?
As I was sewing this fabric I wondered again at its composition. It seemed to have a bit of stretch, so I wondered if it had some elasthane in it.  'Linea Cotone' was written on the selvedge, so I looked that up. I did not find the striped fabric, but I did come across something with the identical selvedge writing. It was sold out BUT ... I learned that it is a combination of 80% cotton and 20 % linnen. (Hmm, should I have clued into linea as a hint?). This made a lot of sense, in retrospect.

bias bound waistband
I also used the back belt loop from the Azuki work pants, just for show. I like that touch!

And I bias bound the inner waistband. I find it looks nice, but also it is easier to sew, than folding up the allowance and missing it when topstitching.

I kept all the buttons, even though the front buttons on my other shorts drive me nuts! Every time I want to put my hands in my pockets (which is something I do!), I have to unbutton them. ...

The button for the cargo pocket will be useful, though, since it can protect my phone when needed.

(A couple more photos at the bottom of page.)

I have decided to post this, even before I have photos of me modelling it. They might take a while to come!

I am nearly finished my next pair of Azuki work pants, and an upcycle shirt. And  I HAVE finished a hat, which I made as an upcycle, and in honour of the Literary Sewing Circle . It is another of the Merchant & Mills bucket hat pattern.

I am calling it the Incognito hat. Here is what I wrote on my review at Pattern Review:

Imagine you are an author who wants to support a disgraced author friend but don't want to be recognized in public with her? You search through your scrap heap of denim and whip up a bucket hat to hide behind.... This season's book is Snap, by Susin Nielson, and features three unlikely friends who become friends in a court mandated anger management program, all three having 'Snapped' and done something out of character. One of the main characters is an author, and her friend shows up in a big hat with sunglasses for their weekly coffee - who wants to be associated with a disgraced public figure in this day and age?!

I used denim from my denim scrap heap, and the lining is from the shirt I am upcycling.

it is hidden, but perfect matching!
