More summer sewing

Goodness me! I had this all written up weeks ago, and I even had the photos done.

I was waiting to finish up the vest (just the last pieces), but with back-to-school I put it off. Then we did go camping one weekend (Fall camping is gorgeous, by the way!). I finished the final touches on the vest last night, but I am going to write it up separately,  since I have a lot to say about it, and I don't yet have the photos.

SHORTS AND TANK TOP

I have had a busy couple of weeks! I finally got around to sewing up the cotton double gauze from Hanoi which local daugther and I had selected last year.

She wanted me to replicate some gauze shorts she has, but my first self-drafted rendition was no good. So I dowloaded a free patern (Tiana's Closet Paperbag shorts), and this was a good fit.

(Note about the pattern: there were a couple of issues I had with the pattern - there were numerous 'click me' ads on the site that almost had me clicking while I looked for the ACTUAL link to the PDF pattern; secondly if you printed more than one size it was difficult to tell which line you wanted, since there was no difference between them, and there were also sewing lines as well as the cutting lines.)

I used the fabric from the bodice of the dyed dress as pocket bags.
I added a facing to my self drafted tank top (instead of the bias binding I had done on the other renditions).

CAMPING CUTLERY BAG

nice and compact
We have a nice litte kit for carrying our cutery and some essentials for camping. We have had it a long time - it is made of some kind of rip-stop nylon, perhaps. It is beginning to fail - stringy fraying edges that are hard to fix, and it has been on my mind to sew up a new one for several years.

My local daughter has come camping with us several times, but has recently booked a camping trip for herself (and beau and dog). We will probably join them, but as she begins to collect camping supplies I thought she might like her own cutlery kit, which got me moving.

I used more of the red neo-shell (see travel cube in last post!), and underlined it with a deconstructed name-brand knapsack. I deconstructed a mesh bag (from a swim-wear company, probably to carry your wet-suit). I debated, because it was a good bag... but needs must!

I reused one harvested zipper from the knapsack, and had to use two purcahsed zips. I changed the style from the inspiration bag. The elastics it had in place to hold the condiments were never convenient, so I made two mesh pockets.

The result was great! It is fun to hold, (a nice weight), and only a couple of small imperfections! I filled it with some camping cutlery, too!

I decided to make a second one, for us, and to make it just slightly larger than the original. (Don't have photos; it came out just a bit neater in the two areas I had trouble with.
